Minimalism is characterized by a minimal number of elements and clear, open spaces. So, there are never too many objects or accessories in a minimalistic bathroom. There is only basic furniture, geometric shapes, and a combination of two colors. Also, minimalist design implies using materials such as steel, chrome, plastic, glass, ceramics, textured wood, and artificial and natural stone. Before giving your bathroom a makeover, you should take a good look at your current bathroom. Observe it and note down the things you need/would like to change to make it minimalist.
Most often, to DIY a minimalistic bathroom, you should start with decluttering and deep cleaning. You should consider painting the walls as well – this is one of the first things on the to-do list. Next, you should evaluate the hardware and fixtures in your bathroom and upgrade them if necessary. Moreover, you should incorporate additional storage solutions to store all the bathroom essentials there. Remember to keep the surfaces clean, as it is one of the main characteristics of minimalism. Along the way, you should update your bathroom features if they are too old or unfit. And lastly, bathroom decor should be limited.
1. Declutter and give your bathroom a deep clean
After you have thoroughly inspected your bathroom, you have probably concluded that there are too many things in there. Probably too many for any design and let alone a minimalistic one. So, the first step in giving your bathroom a makeover is decluttering it. It’s probably the most boring one as well, but it needs to be done. Throw out empty boxes and containers and leave only the ones you actually use. Check for expiration dates as well. You should get rid of anything that doesn’t belong there. When you have finished decluttering, you should move to deep cleaning. Clean the whole bathroom – it will help you see what other things you need to change. A minimalistic bathroom should only have basic bathroom supplies and features.
2. Consider painting the walls
The next key step includes evaluating the walls and painting them if necessary. If the walls are old and dingy or too colorful, or if you want to give them a whole new look, you should paint them. Painting can make a huge impact on a bathroom. And it is definitely something you can DIY. For a minimalistic bathroom, people often use white or some neutral color, even though these are not the only plausible solutions. You can even choose a darker color palette, lime wash paint, or floor-to-ceiling tile. Nevertheless, the wall color should complement the other materials present in the bathroom.
3. Upgrade hardware and fixtures
The next things that need inspection are hardware and fixtures. We often overlook them – and they do make an impact on the bathroom. Over time, they tend to look old and rusty, so you can really freshen your bathroom up with new hardware and fixtures. Switching out the hardware such as towel holders, tissue holders, and hangers, can cast a whole new light on your bathroom. It is also something you can do yourself in no time. The hardware and fixtures shouldn’t be too ornamental to fit with the minimalistic style. You can mix metals such as bronze, aged brass, and blackened steel. Black and chrome are always good choices. Add soft lighting in one of these materials – it is great for setting the mood.
4. Incorporate storage solutions
We keep many things in our bathrooms – it’s only natural. This is especially true for women. We use shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, serums, and other things for hair. Then there are moisturizers, face creams, eye creams, and so on. We also use combs, brushes, hair dryers, hair straighteners,s and curlers. Also, we store other bathroom supplies and toiletries. Men, on the other hand, also have certain products they use to take care of their hair, face, and beard. All in all, there are plenty of things. The best way to ‘hide’ them is in different cabinets and storage features. Consider what kind of storage you can include in your bathroom. There are all kinds of shelves, racks, and cabinets available. Remember that everything should be hidden in a minimalistic bathroom.
5. Keep surfaces clean
As we already mentioned, with plenty of storage in your bathroom, you also solve the issue of clutter. All the surfaces in your bathroom should be clean and clear. So, no cosmetics lying around on the sink or any surface. If you have good storage solutions, this won’t be a problem for you. When everything has its own place, you can easily put it back when you finish using it. However, the problem arises when you don’t have a place and when your exciting cabinets are a mess. Get some baskets, boxes, and different organizers to keep everything neat.
6. Update bathroom features
When you start assessing your bathroom, you should assess the large bathroom features such as the tub or shower, the sink, and the toilet. Do they need replacing? If yes, you should find the right ones. If you need to get a new tub, go for one in a simple shape or a freestanding one. You can add a simple glass or acrylic shower door. When it comes to sink, choose a vanity that creates clean and crisp lines – for instance, a square one. You can easily incorporate storage in the vanity.
7. Limit decor
As far as minimalistic bathroom design is concerned, the decor, like everything else, should be simple and limited. You should keep your bathroom accessories simple. Keeping things simple implies adding one simple decorative element, such as a stool, a candle, or an artwork. For instance, a great decorative element of a minimalist bathroom is a stool next to the shower or in some empty space in your bathroom. It is often complimented with a candle or some scent.
These are a few things you can easily DIY to give your bathroom a minimalistic feel. Having such a bathroom has its benefits – it brings us peace of mind and is easier to clean.
